On The List: IMATS 2013 November 9 & 10

It’s almost that time of year again when makeup artists in the Toronto/GTA area flock to the International Makeup Show with our lists ready to go and cash in hand. This year, my experience will be a little different than previous years. I won’t just be dishing out the money but I’ll be working the show too at the Minked Lashes booth 101! Come visit our booth for the unveiling of a new line of mink lashes. They are absolutely beautiful!

IMATS2013LIST

During my break(s), this is what I’ll be shopping for. If you’ve been following my Instagram, you’ve probably seen my photos of my kit reorganization. I’ve created 3 kits: one for bridal, one for tv and one for fashion.

IMG_20131023_134922

I think this is the best way for me to use what I need and be efficient rather than taking everything I own! Luckily I have doubles (and some triples) of most things, but have had to buy a few extras.

The setup.

The setup.

I’ve started working as a makeup artist at The Shopping Channel and I’ve come to realize that some products used for my bridal or fashion work just don’t work for HDTV.

1. bdellium Brushes (the “b” is silent): I love bdellium brushes and need to add a few more to my collection particularly their precision lip brush, finishing powder brush and precision blush brush. I am still debating if I want the yellow or pink bamboo handles. Maybe I’ll just have to get 1 of each. 😀

2. Beauty Blender Sponges: I haven’t been able to find a place that sells these in bulk without a crazy shipping fee or that sells in Canada. These are great at applying foundation flawlessly when used wet. When working in HD, streaky foundation from a brush is a no-no. I like to use the brush to apply the foundation all over and then use the sponge wet to blend out the edges and smooth out any streaks. I’m usually working on multiple people in a row so having a few on hand will save me time from having to wash in between.

3/4. Eve Pearl HD Foundation/Salmon Concealer Pro Palette Refill: A few weeks ago, Eve Pearl had a Pro Artist day and had an amazing deal on the HD Pro Palette which includes 12 foundations, 6 salmon concealers, 3 cream blushes, 1 mattifier, 1 highlighter, and 1 lip treatment. It’s on sale right now for $250 but I was able to take off an additional $150 on the pro artist day! I LOVE this palette because it is such a great space saver. The empty pans can be used for mixing or for adding more refills. The texture is medium to full coverage but can be easily sheered out. It suits all skin tones from very fair to very dark. It’s important for skin to look like skin on HD because the camera can pick up and amplify texture. I love that you can keep layering and it still doesn’t look cakey. The salmon concealer, which is what Eve Pearl is known for (and it doesn’t hurt that she is a 5 time Emmy Award winning makeup artist) is so amazing under eyes with very deep undertones and bags. It also covers redness really well and is ideal for sensitive skin. I plan on picking up a few more refills of the shades I use the most. One tip I would suggest: be sure to prime or moisturize the skin really well before applying the foundation otherwise the skin can flake.

Eve Pearl will be at The Shopping Channel this Wednesday. I’m totally bummed I won’t be working but I hope to meet her at the show!

5. Stilazzi Clear Set Bag: I’ve come to admire the amazing hosts that I am lucky to work with at The Shopping Channel. They are on-air for 3 hours straight featuring 3-4 different brands with barely any breaks. When I’m on set, I have literally seconds to touch up the hosts and guest hosts which means I have to have my products easily accessible without dropping them! I’ve been using my MAC tool belt on set and while it’s great for holding your brushes it can’t really hold much else. I will definitely be picking up a clear set bag from Stilazzi at the Blur Makeup Room/yaby booth 306. This way I can carry a few brushes with me, blotting papers, my Kett HD pressed powder, tissue, q-tips, sponges, blush, and lip products.

If you’re coming to IMATS Toronto at the Metro Convention Center, be sure to stop by booth 101 and say hi and shop! I’ll be applying Minked Lashes. I’d love to hear what’s on your shopping list! If you haven’t purchased tickets yet, click on this link and see you there!

It was a complete surprise, but another photo of my work has been published on Vogue Italia’s website! The amazing photographer, Ramin Deravian, submitted this shot, one of the outtakes from this shoot that was featured in Remark Magazine’s Fall issue. It’s a beautiful shot and the styling done by, Luis Rajiv, is absolutely stunning. And if you’re wondering who made the fabulous hat, Luis did! On Jamie’s (B&M Model Management), I used Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar in Black Dahlia and Batty. It’s vampy and pretty gorgeous.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes shot after we took off that amazing hat. It was painted black and left marks all over her head, but nothing a little makeup remover couldn’t remove!

The Recap: TIFF 13 Madness!

I’m in recovering mode now that the Toronto International Film Festival is done. The last couple of days I’ve been longing for my cushy pillow. But when you get to start mornings with the likes of Mila Kunis or James McAvoy, you think what pillow? From going between the Ritz and the Windsor Arms Hotel with weddings and private clients in the mix, the madness is finally done after working the event 6 days straight. It’s my 3rd year doing makeup for the festival and every year is just as exciting as the previous one.

Highlights:

I got to do makeup for Russian actress, Eugenia Kuzmina, who is starring in a new John Turturro film called Fading Gigolo. The film also stars some heavy hitters like my all-time favourite Woody Allen, Vanessa Paradis, Liev Schrieber, Sharon Stone, and Sophia Vergara. Eugenia is naturally gorgeous and knew exactly what she wanted for her makeup – smokey eyes, glowing skin and soft lips. She was so lovely to work with. On her eyes, I used Dior 3 Couleurs Smokey Brown Palette, Lise Watier Limited Edition Cream Shadow/Gold Glitter in the inner corner, L’Oreal Liquify Eye Pencil in Carbon Black, and lots of Ardell individual lashes.

I was also very honoured to do makeup for socialite and philanthropist, Suzanne Rogers for Jackie Gideon Beauty. She was attending the George Christy Luncheon. I was in awe of many things but it was her natural beauty and graciousness that I admired the most. Oh ya – and her taste for fashion is pretty UH-mazing! For her makeup, we went with soft pinks and browns on the eyes and did a pretty awesome cat eye with lots of lashes. We matched it with pink cheeks and lips.

I am really lucky to have some genuine friends in the industry. I got to work a couple of days in the InStyle Dior Lounge at the Windsor Arms Hotel. I had such an amazing time working with Dior’s PR queen (she truly is hilarious to work with). Check out the awesome Dior kit I got to work out of. Drool.

It was celeb central! My 2nd day there our morning was a rush of A-listers. Check out some of the creeper shots we took! WARNING: Blurry pictures. Hard squinting may occur.

The above photo is a blurry Thandie Newton being interviewed by InStyle’s editor. Thandie was even more drop dead stunning in person, had a killer voice (she sang a few tunes), and cracked a few jokes. Some women just have it all…sigh.

Ok, the morning when Mila Kunis walked in I was super stoked because my husband and I will be seeing her and the cast of Family Guy September 28 for the Just For Laughs festival! First, she is gorrrgeous. If she were one of my girlfriends (I can dream), she’d be the friend that wouldn’t BS you and would always have a witty comment to say. Yup, I got a creeper shot of her chatting it up with Jessica Chastain (who has skin like a porcelain doll) and the dashing James McAvoy. Other celebs that came through was Daniel Radcliffe who went around to everyone in the room and shook hands introducing himself (gotta love those polite Englishmen), Adrien Brody, Michael C. Hall, Tom Wilkinson, Emily Watson, Olivia Wilde (stunnnning and super sweet), Maria Bello, Jessie Eisenberg (best dry sense of humour ever), Dakota Fanning, and so many more I can’t remember their names!

One of my favourite moments though was getting to meet some of my makeup heros like celebrity makeup artist, Agostina  who I first met in the blogosphere a few years ago. Through the wonders that are Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram we’ve been able to carry on our long distance admiration for each other. I am a HUGE fan of her work and always love seeing the latest campaign or celebrity she is working on. At TIFF, she did makeup for one of my favourite comedic actors, Amy Poehler! I kept eyeing Agostina and wasn’t sure it was her until she came closer and we smiled at each other. I knew right then it was her! We hugged and laughed about finally meeting each other. Yes, we’ve already set our dinner date for next year’s TIFF!

Shortly after that, I got to meet the legendary Grace Lee who is also Maybelline Canada’s lead artist.  I met her once a long time ago back in my MAC days and since then have followed her on every social media outlet possible (we also have a million mutual friends) but we had never been officially introduced. I was a bit of a scaredy cat and feared she wouldn’t remember me. I didn’t say hi until she walked up to me. I realized after I was being ridic but I was also really nervous! I’m telling you, makeup artists are my celebrity.

Star TIFF products:

Dior Diorshow Universal Brow Styler – I’m glad I revisited this product. I absolutely love how precise it fills in and the soft, powder finish. It’s not like a typical brow pencil where it can look so dark. I have yet to try it on someone with very fair brows so I still have to test the universal claim but on me it’s perfect.

Dior Diorshow Maximizer Lash Plumping Serum – I stopped using lash primers years ago mainly because I didn’t like how clumpy my mascara would make my lashes look. I wish I had never tried this product because I’m afraid my lashes can’t live without it! When you first pull it out of the tube, it leaves behind the excess product so your lashes aren’t overcoated with primer. When I apply my mascara now, my lashes are so thick and lifted my lashes do a little dance. It doesn’t hurt that my lashes will get some nourishment too.

Dior Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Mascara – Ok, I’ve tested, bought, reviewed, and raved about a lot of mascaras but I’ve finally found my HG mascara!! Get this – it’s not waterproof either (rejoice!). The only formula that lifts my straight, short lashes up have been waterproof ones. But even with waterproof mascaras, I still get the dreadful smudging. Not with this mascara! No flaking either just thick, curled and voluminous lashes. Oh and the pigment is just as black as L’Oreal’s infamous Carbon Black – seriously (love this mascara but can’t use the waterproof one on me because of smudging). I’ve never really been a fan of curled brushes, but the combination of the brush and formula really works at lifting and curling those lashes. I hate dishing out money for expensive mascaras, but I’m going to have to bite the bullet on this one!

Dior Addict Lip Glow – The combination of lack of sleep, not enough water, and too much coffee did a number on my lips. I had to put away my beloved matte lipsticks and rescued my lips with Dior’s Lip Glow. I LOVE their lip balms. They are so moisturizing and deliver the prettiest shades on the lips. I used their Coral shade all summer and luckily had it replaced thanks to the lovely Dior PR queen. Why you’ll love Lip Glow? It enhances your natural lip colour giving your lips the prettiest shade of pink. The more you apply, the brighter the pink gets.

Feature: Bite Beauty Lip Lab NYC

The fam-jam and I just returned from a 5 day road trip. It was a whirlwind of a trip seeing 5 major cities in 5 days (this is not counting smaller cities we made pit stops in). Our 3rd stop was in the city of bright lights NYC. The last time the hubby and I had visited we were minus 2 kids, so the experience this time around was more kid friendly. Although, I did make a point to fit in some beauty fun for moi!

The blogosphere has been all abuzz about Bite Beauty’s Bite Lip Lab in NYC. I’m a huge fan of their lip products and have written rave reviews on my old blog Makeup Junkie. When I heard they opened up a store where you can make your own custom lipstick, I just had to make a visit! It happen to work out that it was our first stop in New York.

biteliplab2

The whole process took minutes to make especially since I had a colour in mind already. I debated before going if I wanted an everyday shade or something fun and bold for summer (first world problems). I figured, go big or go home so I had the fabulous Brooklyn (tell him I sent you to visit him), mix up a fun pinky-red shade. I wanted a stain-like finish so he suggested the formula be a shiny finish with lots of pigment – very summer appropriate.

biteliplab6

The next step was to choose the scent: peppermint, starfruit, cherry, or violet. I like the cooling effect and fresh scent of peppermint on the lips so I went with that.

biteliplab7

After the scent was selected, little chunks of lipsticks that looked like chocolate truffles were melted and mixed together for my custom shade. Looks good enough to eat right?

biteliplab3

The mixture was then poured into a mold and placed on a cold plate to harden. I tried my best to contain my excitement as my lipstick was being poured. It’s such a simple process, but I was very fascinated by it all and wondered why Toronto didn’t have its own Beauty Lab. Brooklyn let me know that NY was a test run and if it does really well it will come back to Toronto – yipee!

biteliplab1

While I waited for the lipsticks to harden, I checked out the rest of the Bite Beauty products while my oldest son showed off his karate moves. I was very tempted to pick up some lipsticks I had been wanting for my kit, but I resisted!

biteliplab4

The lipsticks were finally ready to be placed into the sleek lipstick tubes. I was over the moon to receive 2 tubes of my lip colour plus he included a little sample of the Luminous Creme lipsticks in Champagne and a lip brush. He also provided a card with the colours I chose in case I wanted more made up in the future. I am so in love with this shade. It’s the perfect mix of bright pink and red. It has a beautiful glossy shine with lots of colour and feels so hydrating on the lips. When I want it to be subtle I dab it on like a stain. After a few hours of wear, it actually leaves a nice stain on the lips.

I definitely plan to make another visit, but hopefully they will be in Toronto before then.I think the next lip colour I make will be the perfect colour for bridal. I had such a fantastic time watching the whole process and chatting with Brooklyn. If you are planning a trip to NYC and love lipsticks like I do, then this a must-do! It makes a great memento. My lip shade is appropriately named NYC. 🙂

Bite Lip Lab is located on 174 Prince St. in Soho NY. Custom lip shade retails for $28 USD. Hours Tues-Sun 11 am – 7 pm.
