Wedding Series: Tips For The Budget-Friendly Bride With Berlyn Lai

wedding-budget-tracker-book-confetti

Most brides dream about their wedding their whole life so when it comes to planning, finding a balance between what you dream of and what you can afford can be difficult. What bride doesn’t want a 3 carat diamond, Dior wedding gown, and sparkly Loubies? For some (or most) of us, that just can’t be a reality but that doesn’t mean you have to spend thousands of dollars to have the wedding of your dreams.

Wedding planner, Berlyn Lai from BLoved Events, knows better than anyone how to stick to a couple’s budget. She shares her tips on what to splurge and save on!

Put your actual budget together and prioritize what’s important to you. In addition to that, here are a few tips you could consider:

  • Be flexible about your wedding date. Saturdays are the popular and most common choice but consider a Friday or Sunday wedding to get better pricing on these less common days. Also consider getting married off-season (November-February) and you could save some money.
  • Save on items less important to you – perhaps it’s centerpieces and floral arrangements, consider doing something simpler with candles and tea lights that could really brighten up your venue but at a much lower cost.
  • Consider a brunch/lunch wedding instead, or perhaps a buffet meal.
  • DIY projects are a great idea and often provide those crafty brides a creative outlet and a way to save money. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from friends and family.

Ask yourself about a wedding you’ve attended, what did you remember most from it? Was it the food, DJ, centerpieces? How do you want people to remember your wedding? That’s how you prioritize and focus on what’s a reflection of you as a couple. Are you both foodies? Spend a bit more on a nicer menu and cut out that photo booth from your budget.

Don’t forget that you could also consult with a wedding planner if you can’t afford to hire them for full planning or day-of coordination. And if you do decide to hire a planner, sometimes there is no greater savings than the stress-relief and peace of mind a professional wedding planner offers.

Hot colours in 2013 – Emerald is pantone’s colour of the year, so we’ll be sure to see it come up in many weddings this year, likely paired with Gold for their elegant feel. Mint is another popular colour this year, it’s not only refreshing but also delicate, and can be mixed with other colours for a beautiful wedding palette.

Rustic Vintage is still a strong wedding trend. We can expect to see more barn weddings, lace, burlap, mason jars filled with signature cocktails as an example.

Birds/Love birds/Use of birdwire – seems to be everywhere in home decor right now and will carry over into wedding decor. Move over burlap, chicken wire is the hot new rustic wedding decor item.

greatgasbymoodboard

Glitzy glamour of the 1920s – with the release of the Great Gatsby movie, this will bring the glitzy decade back into fashion, look out for flapper fashion, stylish headpieces and art deco patterns.

Unique backdrops and backgrounds – whether it’s for a photo booth, dessert table, your ceremony backdrop or behind the head table, the possibilities are endless. Perhaps a DIY project? i.e. beautiful yards of lace, strips of multi colored fabric, or floral garlands hung vertically.

Mix-matched centerpieces – instead of the one flower arrangement on the table, couples are considering a variety of smaller bud vases with a variety of single-stemmed flowers.

Though these may be some of the popular trends in 2013, at the end of the day, what makes a wedding special are those personal elements that come from the couple and those things they love the most. Adding those elements to a wedding will make it unique.

Wedding Series: Berlyn Lai Dishes On How To Deal With Wedding Stress

weddingstress

Planning a wedding is a huge production from choosing a venue, flowers, invitations, and of course the wedding dress of your dreams. It would make any sane person go bat-crazy (which is why the hubby and I did City Hall). But when the special day comes, it’s beautiful and one of the most cherished memories a bride will ever have. Until that moment comes, wedding planner Berlyn Lai of BLoved Events, shares tips on how to stay stress-free and organized.

  • Prioritize what’s important to you – is it photography? the venue? the dress? those letterpress invitations? Work on your budget and stick to it. Don’t buy that Monique Lhuillier dress if it’s not within your budget, stay within your price range. Don’t forget that’s why working with a wedding planner will help you maintain your budget, as they would not make recommendations that fall outside of it.
  • Pace Yourself – take everything one step at a time and pace yourself. Trying to do every thing at once will no doubt create more stress for you. With the help of a wedding planner, have them do the research and make recommendations so all you have to do is make decisions on what you want for your wedding.
  • Remember your love – when things get stressful and the planning gets challenging, take a break and go on a date and remember why you’re embarking on this journey together.
  • Ask for help whether it’s from your other half, your bridal party, your family or from a professional. You’re one person, and you probably have a full time job so no one expects you to do it all by yourself.

There is no such thing as a “wedding season” anymore. Winter and fall weddings are becoming more popular among couples who adore a more rustic, romantic theme. Starting today, I will be starting a wedding series interviewing top experts in the industry to help couples everywhere with tips to help you plan the wedding of your dreams.

First up is wedding planner, Berlyn Lai, of BLoved Events giving you tips on the do’s and don’ts when finding a wedding planner. I will feature 4 daily tips from Berlyn covering everything from planning to decor to kick off the wedding series!

Do’s:

Do meet your wedding planner in person. Personality is key as you’re going
to be spending a lot of time with your planner. You need to like them and
they should even be someone you would be friends with.
Do make sure your wedding planner is certified, anyone can say they are
an event or wedding planner but a professional will have the credentials to
back it up. In Canada, look out for the Wedding Planners Institute of Canada
certification.
Do proper research about a planner before booking them. Understand how
their services can fit into your needs and make sure you get everything in
writing, your planner must have a full contract.
Do consult your other half – it’s his/her wedding also!
Do ask your friends or other vendors for recommendations on a good
wedding planner – i.e. if you attended a wedding and it seemed well planned,
find out if a planner was behind-the-scenes.

Don’ts:

Don’t hire a friend or a relative, unless they are a professional certified
wedding planner. See above note in the “Do” section.
Don’t count on a planner to get you “discounts”. Often he/she may have
connections with various vendors, and these connections could possibly save
you money, but don’t base who you are hiring on this.
Don’t hire a planner just because their services were the cheapest. Like
everything else in life, you get what you pay for.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you’re unsure of something, ask! Your
planner is there to guide you through what to expect during your wedding
planning journey.
Don’t procrastinate in your planning. The average wedding takes about 250
hours to plan, hire your wedding planner as soon as possible so they can help
you put together the wedding of your dreams.
