Trends come, go, and come back again. I love recreating modern versions of iconic beauty looks. Brigette Bardot’s sexy kitten eyes and big bombshell hair is making a comeback thanks to musicians like Adele and TV shows like Mad Men. This is a sexy look that will work for everyone.
Be a modern day Bardot with these easy hair and makeup tricks that will work day or night! I interviewed hair expert, Emily Pike, who helped me create this look on our model Betta.
Get the Look
Makeup:
  • bdellium Tools #710: To recreate a sexy cat eye, a thin pointy liner brush is essential for a precise application. The look I created was a mix of mod 60’s and a cat eye. I love bdellium brushes and the 710 is easy to control especially if you’re lining in the crease.
  • tarte cosmetics Amazonian Clay Waterproof Liner in Plum: To bring this look to modern day, I thought using a coloured liner would give it a fresher look. I love these creamy liners from tarte. They apply so smoothly and stay put all day – no creasing or fading. The shades are vibrant and pigmented. Dip your line brush into the product and start by lining your top lash line and wing it out towards your brow. Then start at the inner corner and make a line in your crease meeting with the tip of your winged liner. Leave the lid bare or apply a beige or white shadow to really accentuate the shape. Use the same liner and brush to line the bottom lash line and join it with your top liner. Use a black liner to line the waterline to give the eye more drama. To make this work for day, skip lining the crease and bottom liner.
Hair:
  • Schwarzkopf OSiS Dust It: This style works best on hair that was previously curled a couple of days before. Brush your hair and use a dry shampoo or a mattifying powder like Dust It by Osis. This will help give you amazing volume and absorb the oils in your hair to refresh your look. Dust your product of choice at your roots and and massage at your scalp with your finger tips. Use the same motion that you would when washing/lathering your hair in the shower.
  • Teasing Comb: Become ONE with a comb – it’s time to tease, tease, tease like crazy! Once you’ve teased your hair from ear-line to hairline, smooth it all back and off your face with a light touch and a soft bristol brush. Take your time and check how it looks in the mirror as you tame the beast of frizz into the perfect shape and desired amount of volume. To make this look more modern and work appropriate just pull a small section of hair from above both sides of your ears and pin them at the back of your head. The result: a mod version of “half up-half down”  with volume and a soft wave. Gorgeous!

Makeup 101: Wear Metallics For Fall

Makeup: Joy David-Tilberg, Hair: Donna Marie De Leon, Model: Masha (Elmer Olson), Photo Assistant: Helen Yinn

If a bold, dark lip isn’t for you here’s one trend everyone can definitely wear this Fall: metallics. Metallics come in all different shades and look instantly richer and oh-so luxe. There are many ways to wear it so have fun and experiment.

To wear a metallic smokey eye here is a MTV Fora tutorial from MTV Canada’s Head Makeup Artist Lucky Bromhead!

Try:

  • A wash of colour on the eye lids for day wear in gold, bronze, olive, or purple. Finish with black mascara and black liner (optional) for contrast.
  • Metallic liners in deep purple, emerald green or navy are a subtle way to wear it for day. It’s a nice alternative to black and brown. For some fun at night line the eyes in gold, silver or cobalt blue!
  • I’m kind of loving metallic lipsticks right now especially in copper. It’s just such a perfect shade for Fall.

Makeup 101: How To Wear Fall’s Dark Lip

Picture

I think the ’90’s are calling me back! Do these names ring a bell? Toast of New York. Black Cherry. Black Honey. Paramount. If you’re a beauty junkie and wore lipstick in the 90’s, then you’re probably having a throwback moment to your teens. My go-to lippies were Revlon’s Toast of New York and M.A.C. Paramount. I never thought for once as a “grown up” I’d be loving a dark lip again. This time around the dark lip that seemed like a faux paux seems so modern this time around that it’s a must-do!

Most of you may run the other direction, but here are some tips on wearing the darkest hues of the season!

Do:

  • Dark lips can make you look really pale and that’s the last thing you want in the dead of winter. Give your skin some warmth by using a bronzer as your blush. Dark lips look gorgeous when paired with a bronzer.
  • This statement hue requires flawless, luminous skin. Otherwise, skin will look flat and radiant skin gives it that modern feel.
  • Dark lips look less overwhelming when you use soft shades on the eyes. I like soft golds, champagnes, and bronze.
  • Make dark lips day-time friendly by choosing sheerer textures in a gloss or stain. You can also dab the lipstick on with your finger for a stain effect.

Don’t:

  • Be afraid to try dark lips! If you choose the right shade, it can look really flattering! Have fun – makeup isn’t permanent.

Makeup 101: Crimson Lips For Fall

Picture

Makeup: Joy David-Tilberg Hair: Donna Marie De Leon Model: Maria (Masha) Elmer Olson Photo Assistant: Helen Yen

The end of a summer is bittersweet; the hot humidity turns into brisk winds but the leaves change to brilliant shades of fiery red, orange, and yellow. I love the fall season. Fashion becomes cozier and makeup becomes moodier. Crimson lips aren’t a seasonal trend anymore. This red hot hue is a beauty staple meaning a red lipstick is a must in your beauty stash!

How To Wear Crimson Lips:

  • To really make the lips the focus, wear barely-there shades on the eyes with just a touch of mascara.
  • Skin should be flawless so use a good coverage foundation and conceal where needed. Always set your makeup with a translucent powder.
  • To give this look some edge, contour the cheeks with a matte bronzer. Highlight the cheekbones with a shimmery – not glittery – highlighter.
  • Full brows help frame the face so don’t skip the brows! Slick brow hairs down with a wax or clear brow gel. For really unruly brows, spray some hair spray on a mascara wand.
  • For a dash of glam, line the eyes with a liquid liner and wing out. To make a statement, pair the bold lip with defined smokey eyes.
  • Make sure lips are in good shape. Exfoliate with a damp, warm cloth and move in a circular motion. Apply lip balm to moisturize and then blot with a tissue.
  • For stay-proof lips, fill the lips in with a matching red lip liner. Apply your lipstick then blot with a tissue or dust with a translucent powder with a tissue placed over your lips. Then reapply again. Don’t like lipstick? Use a gel lip stain.

How To Pick The Right Shade of Red:

Everyone can wear a red lip if you choose the right red for your skin tone. For pale skin tones, try a cool and bright cherry red. (Think Gwen Stefani). For medium yellow and olive skin tones, try a warm-toned fire-engine red. For dark skin tones, try a wine or burgundy red.

Makeup 101: Trial Inspiration Megan Fox

Picture

Whether you’re a fan of Megan Fox’s or not, there’s no denying she is drop dead gorgeous. I did a bridal trial today with one of my past bride’s maid-of-honour, Carla . Now it’s her turn to say “I do”! I’m really excited to do this wedding because these two friends love makeup, are super nice and fun!

This photo of Megan is Carla’s makeup and hair inspiration. I LOVE this look. It’s glamorous and oh-so red carpet – perfect for bridal. I just love how the light catches the eyes and how the lush lashes give this simple look some glam and flirtiness.

Here’s our version. I chose a mix of shimmering soft pinks with charcoal-y grey blacks. What do you think? (Lashes aren’t actually glued on or cut to size!)
